Despite the wonderful, The Time Traveler’s Wife film back in 2009 that starred Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, fans of Audrey Nifenegger’s book were left dissatisfied with many details and scenes left out. HBO and HBO Max reboot and expand the world with a six-episode series for the first season set to premiere later this spring.
Rose Leslie stars as Clare Abshire with Theo James as DeTamble. Desmin Borges and Natasha Lopez are also in the cast as Gomez and Charisse respectively.
Despite a previous film, executive producer Steven Moffat felt it was a ripe time to reproduce this love story as a series. Moffat spoke with the member of the press at the Television Critics Association 2022 that LRM Online was also in attendance.
“Well, the great advantage of a mini-series is we can do the whole story. The movie was quite intelligently abbreviated version, but by abbreviating it—you’re missing the detail and all the complexity. You make it all about the time travel and not the love story,” said Moffat. “In terms of the original book, it’s classic. We do expand on some areas and we do occasionally move things around a bit, but people that love this—well, I hope they love the show because I love it too much not to remain true to its intent and its heart.”
Executive producer David Nutter elaborates more on expansion.
“Well, I have to say when I read Steven’s adaptation of the screenplays, all six of them, it was a situation in which I was just so moved and touched by the depth and the realm in which he was able to achieve each character,” Nutter added. “And really get a chance to really dive into what feelings are all about and how—I can really care so much more about the complexities of who these people were. It’s just magic.
