One of the things immediately obvious to fans from the first trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate, was the fact that Mackenzie Davis was playing the action hero and that she wasn’t completely human. Whilst this isn’t the first female cyborg to appear in the Terminator franchise, it would mark the first time that a female has played the guardian Terminator role in the franchise. Teaming up with franchise stalwart Linda Hamilton to defend a new young female target against Gabriel Luna’s new Rev-9 Terminator, it seems like Davis will take on the brunt of the action work with Luna in this movie.
Director Tim Miller recently spoke with EW and opened up about casting Mackenzie Davis and why he chose her for the role of Grace in this movie.
“It would be easy to go, ‘Okay, you’re going to get some woman who’s an ex-MMA fighter or all about fitness and fighting. But I knew that she really had to connect. Because Sarah in a lot of ways is broken, and I knew that the audience would relate a lot to what had happened to humanity’s future, and as you’ll see in the film, the audience has to really feel for Grace by the end of it. And so I knew first and foremost, she had to be a great actor and Mackenzie is definitely that.”
Linda Hamilton also offered praise for the way Davis transformed herself into an action star for the role.
“I was very happy to see Mackenzie take the mantle of turning her body into a fighting machine. Hopefully she will get all the attention that I got in 1991 for what she has done to make herself ready, to make herself a warrior.”
I guess we will have to wait for the movie to see how effective Davis is in the role of the action hero. I would assume that the character is going to take one hell of a beating before the movies run time is out, but I’ll also guess that she will defeat Luna’s Rev-9 before the end of the movie somehow.
