I was worried for a while. There was a good chunk of time where I was worried that the Minecraft movie wouldn’t actually get a director. I mean, can you imagine that? A world where we’re deprived of a Minecraft movie? Not in this lifetime, I can tell you that much.
According to Variety, the film has locked down a new writer and director to bring the blocky world to life for Warner Bros. The man in question is none other than Peter Sollett. Don’t recognize the name? Well, he was the director behind that one hipster indie romance flick Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, starring Michael Cera.

This will be Sollett’s biggest film to date. While I am poking fun at this film, it is undoubtedly a huge deal. Minecraft has been a juggernaut in the video game industry for years, and while I have no idea what they can do for a story, I also had no idea what The LEGO Movie would be about, and we all know how well that turned out (Plus, it’s worth mentioning that was also a Warner Bros. production).
Roy Lee and Jon Berg are producing along with the video game developer Mojang.
While I can’t say I’m excited for this film, I’ll concede there is always potential in a story that revolves around a concept that is essentially an endless sandbox of ideas. So I’ll save my comments of derision for the trailer. Until then, I can only wish Sollett good luck!
