2018 is a big year for actor Josh Brolin. Over the course of a few weeks, he’ll be playing not one, but TWO huge Marvel characters. The first one to hit the big screen will be Avengers: Infinity War‘s Thanos, and the second will be Deadpool 2‘s Cable. The two couldn’t be any more different from one another, but given that he’s playing both, it’s hard not to wonder who the actor prefers playing.
Speaking with Total Film Magazine, Brolin was asked that very question. While many actors would be perfectly content to try and dodge it, Brolin did actually answer it, and he did so without dissing the other character. Here’s what he had to say.
“Look, I really like doing Cable, and it’s practical. But I think if I was to have a preference, it’d be Thanos, just because my expectation was pretty low, given that I just thought I was a prop. And it was quite the opposite, having seen enough of the movie and realised how cutting edge this technical process is, y’know? I was watching me. I was watching every twitch, every blink. I was watching my eyes. My actions. I was living through my intentions. At the beginning, before I said yes, I called Mark Ruffalo and I said, ‘What do you think of this?’ He was like, ‘It’s going to be really uncomfortable in the beginning, and then you see the movie, and you’ll just be absolutely blown away by the stuff you were doing.’ And that was then. They made huge leaps and bounds in mo-cap territory since then. There’s nothing not authentic about it.”

Brolin is very much an actor who likes to get into the weeds of his roles. Like many, he is someone who is hungry to learn new processes, and it looks like Thanos really helped to scratch that itch for him. What I love hearing from him, as a Marvel Studios fan, is just how invested he was in Thanos. I too had been worried that Thanos would be little more than a prop in the upcoming film, and now that I know he’s not, I’m all the more thrilled to see the finished product.
Cable is another character to keep an eye one as well. Yes, he gets his introduction with Deadpool 2, but if Brolin is to be believed, he’s also getting three more films to grow as a person.
