If you haven’t watched the most recent episode of The Bad Batch and don’t want any spoilers then please do not read any further…
When the original run of Star Wars: The Clone Wars was canceled there were a lot of stories left up in the air. At Star Wars Celebration in 2017, Dave Filoni hosted a panel where he brought some unfinished clips from episodes that he was working on for the upcoming canceled seasons. One of the most talked-about clips was the showdown between Boba Fett and Cad Bane. With the clip ending with both bounty hunters laying on the ground the only answer we knew was that Boba Fett survived the showdown. After that everything has been left up in the air especially with what happened to Cad Bane, did he survived Boba Fett’s blast? You can check out the clip below.

Since that clip was shown at Celebration 2017 fans have debated whether or not Cad Bane was still alive or if that clip was considered canon. Social media and Reddit have seen fans going back and forth about that clip that was considered canon and having lengthy debates. Well, it seems that debate has cooled off with the most recent episode of The Bad Batch: Reunion and the triumphant return of Cad Bane. In typical bounty hunter fashion, we are reintroduced to the notorious Cad Bane with a standoff between himself and Hunter. The showdown is a very similar shot for shot from the unaired episode between Bane and Boba Fett.
With the return of Cad Bane, it seems that most fans have accepted that the unaired episode is no longer canon. But for a small group of fans including me, there are some clues that suggest that the showdown with Boba Fett and Cad Bane did happen even if it never aired during The Clone Wars. Dave Filoni has mentioned several times that the costume designs for all the characters are intentional. That brings up why Cad Bane was wearing a chest protector now? He traditionally wears a long trench coat with little to no armor. Being the fastest gunslinger in the galaxy means that he cannot have bulky armor slowing him down. What if that chest armor is a result of his duel with Boba Fett and now Bane wears it to protect himself.
The last clue that suggests that the duel between Fett and Bane is canon is in the dialogue between Hunter and Bane. When Bane talks with Hunter he says that once you figure out how to take out one clone you can take out the rest. It is in the next lines that Hunter replies “You’re in for a surprise” which suggests that Hunter is a different type of clone. Bane’s response “I doubt that” makes us believe that he has taken on the highest form of Jango Fett’s clone which would be Boba Fett. The result of the showdown has Hunter being shot in the chest and Cad Bane being left unscathed with his droid taking the shot from Hunter.
With the similarities between the two duels and the updated armor on Cad Bane, this makes me believe that the duel between Boba Fett and Cad Bane is still canon. If it is not, then we still do not know how Boba got the dent on his helmet that appears in the Original Trilogy.
