A few days back, it was widely reported that Ben Affleck had confirmed the title of the upcoming Batman film. While speaking with the Associated Press regarding his new film, The Accountant, The Batman director and star confirmed the title of the film.
His exact statement was as follows:
“The movie I think is going to be called The Batman. At least that’s what we’re going with now. I might change it.â€
However, it sounds like he’s having some real buyer’s remorse about that statement..
Speaking with E! News, Affleck said:
“I mentioned the other day… it’s been around for a long time, the movie… there is no Batman movie happening yet, we’re still trying to figure it out, you know, get the script and budget and all that stuff. And someone said, ‘what are you calling it?’ and I had said, like, back when we were promoting another movie, I was like ‘we don’t have a name for it, we’re just going with The Batman or Batman movie’, and I said that, and everyone was like ‘Affleck announces the title of his Batman movie.’â€
You can check the moment around 4:30 into the video:
Not to be that guy…ah, screw it, I’ll be that guy. In the interview with Associated Press, there was really no other way to take his statement. He did say he may change the title down the line, but there was little-to-no ambiguity in what he said. He did mention he could change it, but it certainly sounded like he said, for the time being, the title they were going with was indeed The Batman.
That being said, Hollywood is a fickle beast. Oftentimes, films are houses of cards. It takes one thing to go wrong for an entire project to unravel. In addition, details are constantly changing — be it in regards to the script or cast and everything in between. As such, Affleck is probably very hesitant to reveal much, for fear of things changing down the line.
What do you think of Affleck’s response to the news that broke a few days back?
Do you think he misspoke, do you think it was taken out of context, or is he just full-on backpedaling?
