What in the hell’s going on with The Batman? This is a film that’s been on our radar for a solid four years or so — ever since Ben Affleck first signed on to play the Caped Crusader in the DC Extended Universe. Of course, a lot has changed in the years since then. DC has had their shot at creating their shared universe, and while they managed to hire a solid cast to take on the roles in this world, the execution of the actual movies has been questionable at best.

This has led to an actor — the incomparable Ben Affleck — sidling towards the exit. With him showing less enthusiasm than ever before about the future of the character in this world, what will they be doing next? There have been rumors of him getting replaced, as well as rumors that involve them going with a younger Batman…but which one is it?

A new report from THR that chronicles the current state of the DC Universe mentioned that Matt Reeves’ upcoming film will focus on a young Bruce Wayne, and as such, it’s unlikely Affleck will return. So how far along is the film? As of this past Memorial Day weekend, Reeves is said to have turned in the first act of the script.

While this has been the rumored approach for the films for some time, it’s hard not to think of how brilliant it is. Give Matt Reeves the opportunity to make one or two films with this younger Batman so that audiences can connect with him, and by the time Justice League 2 hits, we’re willing to accept the same actor with grayer hair as the older Batman. They don’t have to worry about Affleck comparisons — at least not as strongly.
