The Cathedral directed by Ricky D’Ambrose
For director and writer Ricky D’Ambrose, The Cathedral mirrors his perspective growing up in the past couple of decades.
The film stars Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) and Brian d’Arcy James (Spotlight) as a couple striving to live over the years finding their American dream with their ups and downs of family life. Ricky D’Ambrose directed and wrote the film.
Here is the Sundance description of the film:
An unseen narrator unfolds the constellation of familial relationships of Jesse Damrosh, born in 1987, chronicling the dissolution of his parent’s marriage and the feuds, money concerns, and deaths that define a typical middle-class American existence. Yet in this impressionistic account of one life, what penetrates the most are not events but incidents. The beautiful yet quotidian moments of the should-padded jacket of an aunt, the certain print of a rug, an ad for a Kodak film, or the light in a room one afternoon from years before.
LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with director and writer Ricky D’Ambrose about his semi-biographical story growing up during the 1980s and 1990s. We talked about his reflection in those two decades with his perception of his family, along with important cultural and political events that shaped his upbringing.
The Cathedral marks Ricky D’Ambrose’s second feature film that made its premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. He was a participant in the 2021 Biennale College Cinema program. His films appeared at the Berlin International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Viennale, and New Directors/New Films to name a few. In 2017, he was named Filmmaker magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. His directorial feature film debut was with Notes on an Appearance in 2018 about a young man leaving behind an obscure of letters, postcards, and notebooks amidst talk of violence and demagoguery.
The Cathedral is currently showcased at the Sundance Film Festival 2022 this year.
