NYCC is a Mecca for nerds and film buffs from around the world. LRM’s very own Jace Miliam recently completed the journey. While there Jace attended a roundtable discussion with Constanine: City of Demons Screenwriter J.M. DeMatteis. The screenwriter talked about the challenges involved with turning 5 episodes into a full length feature film. Here’s what DeMatteis said:
“Well here’s the good part for me. All I had to do was write a full length movie and then after the script was done, which I just found out that when they did some of the earlier stuff, first they wrote them in the short segments and then someone said, ‘oh we need a movie now’ they had to go back and flesh it out which I could imagine would be really, really difficult.”
A truly daunting task even for the likes of a screenwriter like DeMatteis, whose writing credits include Justice League Dark, Batman: Bad Blood, and Batman vs. Robin, among others.

Luckily for DeMatteis, encountered the inverse and had the luxury of fully fleshing out Constantine: City of Demons prior to it getting the episodic treatment.
Whereas, this, I had the freedom to write the whole movie and so then everyone went back and said, ‘okay, we need to break this into little five minute segments. Where are good places to break?’ And they figured that out after the fact which made it a lot easier that way but for me, it was great cause I just got to tell the story. I didn’t have to worry. I had to keep it in the back of my head, but really when you build a scene the right way there’s any number of scenes that could end and be the end of that episode.
DeMatteis can definitely script some compelling superhero stories, so his involvement in Constantine: City of Demons is exciting.
