The CW Acquires Broadcast Rights To Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing was such an interesting show over on DC Universe. It was effectively sandbagged upon release. While it was never fully confirmed, there seemed to be some exec out there with a bone to pick with the James Wan-produced series. Thanks to a rumored accounting error, however, the show was canceled after a single episode. Sadly enough, it actually went on to be somewhat beloved by those who actually saw it.

During the rest of the show’s run, it basically had the specter of death hanging over it. And in the year-plus since the show aired, DC Universe has made no attempt to remedy the situation. So, what does this mean for the property? Would the Swamp Thing wallow in obscurity for years and take its dear sweet time returning to the small screen?

Probably not, as Variety is reporting that Swamp Thing has been picked up by The CW. In all honesty, it makes a lot of sense. In last year’s Arrowverse crossover, it was confirmed that the Swamp Thing events take place on a different Earth, and therefore have a snug place within the DC Multiverse. Additionally, this is very much on-brand for The CW, who has even revived some characters like John Constantine for various purposes over the years.

It is not explicitly stated in the report that the show will continue on The CW, or if these rights only apply to the first season of the show. However, given the track record of the network, I wouldn’t be surprised if this means we’ll see a continuation of the show, or if the characters will spill over into other aspects of the Arrowverse. Either way, it’s pretty exciting. If nothing else, it could find another life on the network and go on to be a big hit.

As someone who refused to pay for DC Universe, I’m excited to see if I like the series. It may be the perfect blend of horror and superhero that I’ve been waiting for, and maybe this time it won’t get sandbagged. How do you feel about Swamp Thing potentially getting a second life at The CW? Let us know your thoughts down below!
