The Dark Crystal holds a dark, creepy place in our hearts. It was a film that was very much in the vein of a lot of fantasies of the time, with the big difference being that it was a world made up entirely by puppets. And no, these weren’t your average fluffy puppets. These were dark, twisted, and demented creatures. Even crazier were the “Gelflings,” who ventured dangerously deep into the uncanny valley. All the same, it was a film very notable for its production design and visuals.

Nowadays, virtually everything is being remade, rebooted, sequelized, prequelized, and everything in between. Recently, there was word of Labyrinth getting a sequel. But if you thought that’s where it would end, you’d be wrong. Now, a new teaser from Netflix shows that the folks over at Jim Henson have been hard at work at creating aprequel to the beloved 1982 film. This 10-episode series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, will take place many years before the original film, and will be helmed by The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier.

If you have concerns that the majesty of the Jim Henson puppets will be replaced by CG, then you’re in luck. As you can see in the teaser above, they’re going great lengths to show the state-of-the-art creatures they will be utilizing.

Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content at Netflix had the following to say about the announcement:

“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the art of puppetry perfected by the Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects. I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”

Lisa Henson, CEO of the Jim Henson Company had the following to say about the upcoming series:

“Louis Leterrier is passionate about the world of The Dark Crystal and has an incredible creative vision for the series. He brings this passion to every facet of the production as he leads the talented team of artists and writers that are bringing this entire universe to life. Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.”
