The Devil Wears Prada 2 | Review

As anticipated, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was the must see film this weekend. Opening with a flashing $77M in the US while globally at $234M. In other words, the film made its money back at over 200% of its budget.

The Synopsis

Almost 20 years after making their iconic turn as Miranda (Meryl Streep, “Mamma Mia!”) Andy (Anne Hathaway, “Les Misérables”), Emily (Emily Blunt, “Edge of Tomorrow”) and Nigel (Stanley Tucci, “Big Night”) return to the fashionable streets of New York City and the sleek offices of Runway Magazine in the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2006 phenomenon that defined a generation.

I think overall The Devil Wears Prada 2 delivers a new, very well polished return for the fans. Repeating modern iconic scenes and fun quotes from 20 years ago.  While for me it missed some of its enchantment, although maintaining its essence. Meryl Streep’s return as “Miranda” felt more human. Streep’s performance was impeccable. Adding the comedic take on “what can and can’t be said” was one of my favorite scenes. Emily Blunt was another highlight, bringing a more mature “Emily” that continues to be career driven showing what she is willing to do to grow status. Stanley Tucci, Streep and Blunt maintained what made The Devil Wears Prada characters successful.

The new grown up “Andy,” played by Anne Hathaway in my opinion didn’t maintain the bar. This is the character I found hard to sympathize with. Not really showing to have matured since she left Runway in The Devil Wears Prada. There was not much development which may have been the reason I found the plot to be predictable. Another character I didn’t find believable was “Andy’s” love interest, “Peter” played by Australian actor Patrick Brammall (Colin from Accounts). There was no chemistry between the two actors. How is it that there was no kiss before the ”break”? Maybe that could have helped make it believable to see some spark between the two.

A performance is always great in films, It would have been a big hit had they added Madonna since now they had a bigger budget!. After all Vogue by Madonna was the fashion montage song and is still used in The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is now in theaters.
