Elizabeth Banks will be executive producer and star as Pebbles in The Flintstones sequel, Bedrock. Fox will be teaming up with Warner Bros. Animation with Banks and Lindsay Kerns will write the pilot script. This sequel set 20 years after the ending of the original animated series. The Flintstones first aired in 1960 and had 6 seasons.
Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said:
Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock. Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really.
A description of the show
Bedrock, will follow Pebbles, now in her 20s, starting her own career while her dad, Fred, is nearing retirement. The Stone Age is fading to an enlightened new Bronze Age resulting in the people of Bedrock finding this evolution “harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.”
Peter Girardi, executive VP alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation had said:
The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation. Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and Fox and [Banks’ company] Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock (sorry).
I feel that this show isn’t needed. Elizabeth Banks’ reboot project, Charlie’s Angels, did poorly so I’m surprised she took on another. Banks has been called out for her controversial statements regarding her Charlie’s Angels flop.
