The Golden Globes Will Not Be Aired By NBC, Tom Cruise Returns His Awards

The Golden Globes has always seemed pointless to me because of the Academy Awards. Though I don’t put stock in any Award Show, it has always felt like the Children’s version of the Oscars.

If you haven’t heard, The Golden Globes are in a heap of trouble. No, it’s not because they are pointless. This time.

The Awards are picked by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association aka HFPA. HFPA has been under fire for months for a lack of diversity among members, and ethical lapses. Sacha Baron Cohen even called out the “all-white” HFPA while receiving his Golden Globe for Borat 2. The Times confirmed HFPA doesn’t have a single Black member.

HFPA did announce a list of possible reforms last week, but this actually made things worse. The changes were called “window dressing platitudes” by Time’s Up. Netflix and Amazon quickly came forward saying their films and shows will not be featured at the ceremony anymore.

Now, NBC and Tom Cruise are coming down on HFPA. Hard.

NBC announced they will not be airing the Golden Globes next year. They have broadcast the ceremony since the 1990s.

NBC released the following statement to CNN Business:

We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.

To make matters worse, Tom Cruise, the last true movie star, retuned his three Golden Globe award to HFPA, reports CNN. They were awarded for Jerry Maguire in 1997, Born on the Fourth of July in 1990, and Magnolia in 2000.

Everyone knows it’s not wise to piss off a Peacock… or Tom Cruise. At this point, we can only wait and see how The Hollywood Foreign Press Association responds.
