Ian McKellen says he would play Gandalf again in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum if he’s still alive when they film it. The film was announced not too long ago, and I can’t really call it a prequel as such because the story happens within the timeline of the first film/book in series The Fellowship of the Ring.
Since the movie is being made by WB with the same team as made The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, I think the idea is to make them connected. It would therefore be weird to not have Gandalf and Aragorn played by both Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortenson. No idea on Viggo, but McKellen told The Times that he’s up for playing Gandalf again, as long as he’s alive when it films.
The veteran actor is now 85, old the newspaper he’s heard “stirrings in Tolkien land”, and due to his latest role he “hasn’t shaved in months”.
“But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan.” Yet if offered the role he says he’ll take it “if I’m alive.”

I’m still not sure this movie is anything more than a cash grab by WB who are desperate to milk the franchise for more than they have already. Is there really a story there to be told in a film, or two film format? Let’s put it this way, I’ll be shocked if this ends up being any better than The Hobbit movies. I personally found those to be poor adaptations of a smaller story expanded into three films simply to make more money.
Either way this is getting made, so we will find out eventually.
What do you think as Ian McKellen says he would play Gandalf again in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum if he’s still alive when they film it.? Thoughts below as always.
