The Lion King Not Feeling The Love Tonight On Rotten Tomatoes

Disney seems to have this live-action adaptation formula down. They know how to bring those iconic scenes from the original versions to life and how to create near-identical replications that please hardcore Disneyphiles. But, given their tendency to skew so close to the source material, it’s something that was bound to start wearing some critics thin, and it looks like The Lion King may be something of a victim of that approach.

The film’s reviews are starting to roll in, and while our own critic Fox Troilo thinks it’s one of the stronger of the live-action movies from the House of Mouse, there are many others who have differing opinions on the matter, as indicated by its score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As of this writing, the film is sitting at 60%, which is the borderline between a “Fresh” rating and a “Rotten” rating. There are 115 reviews so far, so while there is plenty of room for them to increase their rating, the general consensus is that there are some big flaws in the movie.

In addition to The Lion King being one of the closest films to its animated counterpart, it also features photorealistic lions. While this has its positives, apparently, one big negative is that the characters can’t emote like they do in the animated film, and that results in stunted emotion, which is a bit of a shame.

But what do you think? Will you still head into the theaters to see it, and do you think it’ll prevent the movie from breaking $1 billion at the box office? Let us know your thoughts down below!
