The Lion King Projected To Hit North Of $150M Opening Weekend

The idea of Disney adapting their animated classics for the live-action format is something that was guaranteed to make them a whole lotta money. Generations of moviegoers grew up with these stories, so getting the opportunity to actually see them executed in a different format is actually pretty cool. With these different takes, we get to see a more in-depth look at the story, and dive deeper on the character relationships.

But if there’s one of these films that seems destined to break all sorts of records, it’s The Lion King. Not only is the original film so beloved, but the new take is being helmed by The Jungle Book’s Jon Favreau, who is using cutting edge technology to make these lions look as photorealistic as possible.

The result? It looks like it’s going to make gangbusters at the box office. According to THR, one tacking service is predicting a $150 million-plus opening weekend. While we don’t expect this to be completely, one hundred percent accurate, it does indicate that people are aware of this movie and excited to see it, and that’s even though it’s still a few weeks out.

For comparison, Beauty and the Beast took in $174.8 domestically in its opening weekend. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Lion King approached or broke those numbers, when all said and done.
