The Mandalorian Season 2 Production Cut It REALLY Close To Pandemic Shutdown

The Mandalorian Season 2 could have been affected by the pandemic…

I’m sure plenty of Star Wars fans are happy that The Mandalorian will be virtually unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of the larger scope of the series, Lucasfilm managed to churn out a new season of the fan-favorite Star Wars series in less than a year. Even by TV terms, that’s damn impressive. I guess it just goes to show how smooth overall production can go with the new Stagecraft technology. And thanks to that, we’ll be getting a new season this fall.

But, little did we know, the show could very well have gone a different way. As it turns out, the production of The Mandalorian Season 2 was in production right at the front end of the pandemic. But how close was the show to not finishing its principal photography? Speaking with TheWrap, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed just how close they cut it.

“Under the wire?” Kennedy said. “It was literally five days and the country went down. We were enormously lucky, and then we didn’t wait (to finish postproduction). Even though we wondered to what extent people could work remotely, our IT department and ILM had everybody up and running within a week, working from home and continuing to work in the cutting room and on visual effects shots. It was pretty staggering how quickly they got everybody up and running. So we haven’t really lost any time.”

I have to say, that’s damn impressive. While they may have avoided issues with production, they definitely had to adapt to post-production in a new world. Switching things up from a studio-centric workflow to a home-centric one is no easy feat. Then again, it is one many aspects of the industry have successfully adapted to. The main surprise here for me is that almost no time was lost in the process. I can only imagine how stressful it must have been.

But, at the end of the day, the audience will be the one to benefit. We can sit back on our couches and enjoy The Mandalorian Season 2 on-time this coming fall. Given that Marvel Studios may be pushing their shows, Disney+ is pretty lucky as well.
