Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has had two strong weekends at the box office and should continue to have great legs in its third week, facing off against the R-rated Alien: Covenant, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, and Everything, Everything. One of the more exciting aspects of the film was Stan Lee’s cameo. Stan Lee didn’t exactly play a Watcher, as much as an agent or informant of sorts for the cosmic beings, who appeared in their more traditional, big-headed form from the comics. This confirmed a long-held fan theory that Lee plays the same character in every MCU film, observing Earth’s mightiest heroes throughout their adventures.
If you’ve seen the film, maybe you noticed this mistake in continuity that I missed. Let me give you a clue: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set in 2014 while Captain America: Civil War is set in 2016. Did you catch it now? In Vol. 2, Stan Lee references being a FedEx delivery man… which wouldn’t have happened for another two years after his conversation with the Watchers. CinemaBlend talked to James Gunn about the error he created in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s timeline:
“One thing I found very funny and interesting is the fact that people thought Stan Lee is a Watcher and that all of these cameos are part of him being a Watcher. So, Stan Lee as—probably—a guy who is working for the Watchers was something that I thought was fun for the MCU. And yes, I know I made a mistake. I’ll own up to my mistake because Guardians of the Galaxy 2 theoretically happens in 2014 which is before Infinity War. And Stan Lee in the movie says, ‘That time I was the Fed Ex guy,’ which is what he is in Civil War. I screwed up; I wasn’t thinking, But I’m going to say that probably Stan Lee used the guise of a Fed Ex guy more than one time.”
I actually think a better explanation would be that Stan Lee is a full fledged Watcher (his appearance as a human aside), or has made use of their abilities. Though I read the comics, I’ve don’t know a whole lot about the Watchers, but upon doing some research I learned that they can manipulate space and time. It makes sense that since he was there after the break-up of the Avengers in 2016, he may have returned to the past to give his bosses and/or buddies a heads up on such an important event.
Do you think Stan Lee’s Watcher agent has time travel skills? Or does he consider it a waste to use a costume only once? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
