The New Mutants Gets A New THEATRICAL Release Date — Will This One Stick?

The New Mutants gets another theatrical release date!

I can’t think of a movie that’s been given the shaft as many times as The New Mutants. This thing was supposed to hit more than two years ago at this point. First, it was set for April 13, 2018, and then February 22, 2019, and then August 2, 2019, and then finally April 3, 2020. Interestingly enough, the first two dates were more of a lack of confidence from 20th Century Fox. The third date was pushed in the midst of the merger with Disney, and the last a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not long ago, after its April 3 release date passed us up, there were reports of a PVOD listing. So, after all this time and after all these delays, did Disney finally decide to release it directly for homes? That seemed like it could very well be the case. But as the title indicates above, that isn’t how this story ends. At least not for now.

After much delay, it turns out Disney is not releasing the film straight to Disney+ or Hulu. instead, they have dropped an August 28 release date for this year. That’s right, in a few short months, we’ll finally get to see director Josh Boone’s take on The New Mutants. Even more interesting is that it will be the sole film to gain a wide release on that Labor Day weekend.

No to hype this up too much, but this bodes well for the quality of the movie. Disney still releasing this in theaters when fate seems to be encouraging them to just send it to homes seems to fly in the face of common sense. Could it mean that they have enough faith to just let audiences decide? The fact that it’ll be the only movie coming out that weekend means they could make solid cash, assuming audiences even come out, of course.

One other perspective is that they are sending it out there only to push it back again. Now, I don’t think they’d do this on purpose, but it’s very possible that the pandemic could take a turn for the worse. If this does happen, they could be forced to pull it out for a fifth time.
