Last fall, audiences over at Fox were treated to a new space-faring TV show that masqueraded as a Star Trek parody. However, as any viewer of the show will likely tell you, this isn’t really a parody as much as it is an honest attempt to make a good classic Star Trek show without having to call it Star Trek. Sure, there are a few jokes, but they by no means dominate the show, nor do they really elicit much more than a chuckle.
But none of that stopped the show from being an unexpected good time. While I was never really a huge fan of the Star Trek series, this seemed to hit exactly the right spot. It had the contemplative nature of Trek but had a cast of characters that felt a lot more relatable than what I saw in the original series or The Next Generation (before you crucify me, I’m not saying those are bad shows, but that I could never get into them).
