If you’ve had a chance to see the trailers for filmmaker Vaclav Mahoul’s hard-hitting The Painted Bird, it’s not difficult to see why it would be a bit controversial in what it portrays. As such, Mahoul really hopes audiences walk in with an open mind, as he revealed in discussions with our own Nancy Tapia.

“So the people are saying to me, “Vaclav, I am so scared. I don’t know if I will go to the cinema to watch your movie, because I was reading, I have heard.” You know? And I said, “Look, the best way, just only go and watch it and just only to make your own opinion.” And mostly, in 90% the feedbacks or directions are, “So sorry! Your film is not true.” That’s what they did say, and then we started our interview. It’s about art. It’s about reality. It’s about good and evil inside all of us. So this film is bringing so many questions, and no answers. So, it’s very liberal movie, which is not pushing the audience, “You must think this. You must see all this. You must go here.” You know? So no, it’s actually open way for open minds.”

And it does seem like some minds are being opened, as the film is being submitted for an Oscar this year. Marhoul, however, wants to make it clear that he didn’t make the movie for the accolades.

“Because, for me, the biggest success was just only to be in the main competition in Venice with this movie. So that’s great. I’m so happy, of all those feedbacks from the people, this is the best award. I am not making your films to get Oscars. I’m crazy. I’m doing the films for myself first. And then for the audience, which maybe they will follow me, maybe not. So that’s it. So should be fine, of course, to be nominated. But it’s not, never was my ambition. Never! It’s not, and never be.”

We’ll see if he manages to make home a trophy anyway!
