The Penguin Mid-Season Review – Best TV Show Of 2024 So Far

Folks I was gonna review The Penguin as a full season, but it's too good, so here is my mid-season review for The Penguin.

Folks I was gonna review The Penguin as a full season, but it’s too good, so here is my mid-season review for The Penguin. I’ll be staying SPOILER FREE on this review, and I encourage you to check it out for yourself. I do plan to review each episode weekly from this point on until the Season Finale.

Any Good?

Just my opinion of course, but so far The Penguin is the best TV show I’ve seen in 2024. To be fair, it’s not been a standout year of TV. However, I truly think The Penguin would compete with any of the best series you can think of. I’ll be shocked if there’s no Emmy awards for this show, especially lead actors Colin Farrell and Cristin Millioti. Episode 4, which is the most recent to air, surely guaranteed the award for Milioti alone.

I genuinely think fans could enjoy this series even if they were not fans of The Batman. The series does not require anyone to have watched The Batman at all. However, there are a lot of little details which I found both enhanced by the film and most recently in Episode 4, some details which improve some of the side stories in the movie.

The first few episodes revolve mostly around Oz (Farrell). In fact the opening episode almost doesn’t have a single moment which isn’t told through Oz’s perspective. This does change in Episode 2 and certain characters begin to get more screen time. Those are mainly Oz’s…. recruit, Victor and Sofia Falcone played by Millioti. The background characters are however all well realised and there’s a kind of guest appearance by Mark Strong as a younger Carmine Falcone in flashbacks. Strong is suitably menacing, great little role for him. The show does however focus on the two or maybe three lead characters and that’s fine.

What can I say though? Great crime story, any crime fans that don’t like superheroes might dismiss The Penguin, don’t. This is Sopranos level, not something like Secret Invasion. Gritty, interesting, constantly playing with your expectations, brilliant writing, exceptional acting. The Penguin has it all.

Episode 4 was by far the standout episode so far and since the show has just gotten better each week I am hoping that continues. In fact I already see fans saddened that Arkham Asylum series was cancelled after seeing this week’s episode.

I review a lot of geek TV series and The Penguin is easily my favorite show I’ve reviewed this calendar year. You can catch the show on HBO and I heartily recommend it. If you liked The Batman, watch this, you’ll love it. If you didn’t like The Batman, watch The Penguin, you’ll love it.

So yeah, watch it, because so far it’s the best TV show of 2024 for me.

GRADE: A

For the first 4 episodes combined. Episode 4 was 100% an A+ for me.
