The Russos Talk Returning To The MCU

RDJ and the Russos get a massive payday for the next two Avengers films and RDJ was instrumental in getting the Russos back.

It was not a complete surprise last summer when Joe and Anthony Russo appeared at San Diego Comic-Con to be announced as the directors for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has struggled creatively since the release of Avengers: Endgame. Additionally, the Russos’ recent original output with Cherry and The Gray Man has not connected with audiences. The relationship of the two is needed now more than ever.

In an interview with Empire, the Russos promoted their upcoming Netflix blockbuster The Electric State when they addressed their MCU return alongside Robert Downey, Jr. as Dr. Doom. As it turns out, money was not the motivating factor. According to Anthony Russo, it was a much-needed creative spark.

Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end. We’re very close with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years.”

“We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us. You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.”

Joe Russo added that it took a little convincing to bring back Endgame co-screenwriter Stephen McFeely to the MCU.

“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ You were like, ‘Fuck no. Absolutely not.’ And then you hung up. And the next morning at 7:30 you called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea.’”

Additionally, The Fantastic Four cast of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are set to appear. Lastly, Chris Evans will be back, though possibly as a new character lifted from the multiverse rather than Steve Rogers.
