So far actual plot of THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS has been a bit of a mystery. It’s been largely going off the whole “what do pets do when their owners leave?” gimmick. And while that’s all well and good, a film can’t survive on a gimmick for too long. The teaser and trailer we’ve seen thus far, while charming and cute enough to sell to the target audience, haven’t done much to tell us about what the movie will actually be about.

Now, with the second trailer, we finally know what story the filmmakers are trying to tell.

From what we can gather from the trailer, THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS tells the story of Max, a dog who’s more than content with the life that’s been given to him. But that perfect life is dashed to pieces when his owner brings home another dog named Duke. Through a series of circumstances, Duke manages to get the pair captured by animal control, and thus begins their journey back home to the owner who loves them.

Of course, the film will have its twists and turns along the way. Kevin Hart plays a rabbit named Snowball, who appears to be the “godfather” of some underground band of animals, and he will no doubt add to the complications the two leads will face.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS is the fifth feature film from Illumination Entertainment, which has thus far brought audiences the DESPICABLE ME films, along with MINIONS and THE LORAX. Based on the premise alone, this movie looks like a strong contender to continue their streak of financial successes. After all, what kid doesn’t like pets? While some of the humor seems to be quite juvenile in nature, there does seem to be enough humor to please the adults who mosey on over to see the movie.

On the whole, I can’t imagine this to be an exceptional film, but none of their movies have been as of yet. While I found the DESPICABLE ME films to be “cute,” they never really spoke to me personally. THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS seems to be along the same lines, but we’ll have to wait and see. Who knows? I may be in for a big surprise.
