The Simpsons To Slowly Phase Out Apu

You’ve probably heard about the controversy by this point, but if not, I’ll give you the Cliff Notes version. In recent years, there’s been a growing number of people who think the character of Apu in The Simpsons is a racist caricature. This has led many to wonder if they’ll be keeping his character around, as it could lead to more unwanted controversy around what has been a FOX mainstay series for years.

Well, Apu fans, I’m sorry to report that it looks like the character may very well go the way of the Dodo very soon. This news comes from IndieWire, who spoke with producer Adi Shankar, whose series Castlevania recently got a second season on Netflix. Here’s what he told the outlet.

“I got some disheartening news back, that I’ve verified from multiple sources now: They’re going to drop the Apu character altogether. They aren’t going to make a big deal out of it, or anything like that, but they’ll drop him altogether just to avoid the controversy.”

This came months after Shankar launched a contest to help solve the problem. The goal was to get a script that “in a clever way subverts him, pivots him, writes him out, or evolves him in a way that takes a creation that was the byproduct of a predominately Harvard-educated white male writers’ room and transforms it into a fresh, funny and realistic portrayal of Indians in America.”

With the show taking the easy way out and eliminating him altogether, it will certainly solve their problem, but it is unfortunate, especially for those who grew attached to characters over the years.
