Despite some recent rumors to the contrary, the Star Wars Rey sequel is NOT cancelled! I won’t get into exactly where the debunked rumor began. However, I think it did gain some traction through being shared by some more reputable outlets. After the rumor spread Lucasfilm sources reached out to two outlets they have in the past to debunk the rumor. Both i09 and SWNN were contacted to debunk the rumor and both outlets have been used by Lucasfilm in the past to debunk information.
Here is what SWNN had to say.
“After reaching out to verify the report, sources in the know are telling us that the report is highly inaccurate. Steven Knight is very much attached as the writer and the production is definitely not “delayed indefinitely”, we hear.”
As for i09,
“You can take that latest Star Wars rumor and throw it in the sarlacc pit. Earlier this week, rumors surfaced that the upcoming Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Star Wars film featuring the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey had been delayed indefinitely. The reason? Creative differences with the film’s writer, Steven Knight.”
“Well, that’s not true, according to Lucasfilm. A source at the company told io9 the report is inaccurate and Knight continues to write and be a part of the process. In fact, the company is waiting on his latest draft as you read this.”

Both outlets are excellent sources who do not engage in the rumors and leaks circles. I cannot say this for the original source of this rumor. Therefore of course, you can tell which set of information I am more inclined to buy. That being said there are a group of ‘fans’ who were in celebration of this initial news and are now refusing to accept someone was yanking their chain. I do think the fact some more reputable sites ran the rumor helped sell it to the masses.
I’m not sure there is much else to say? We still don’t know when the script will be ready or when the film will shoot. But the movie is still in development. I doubt even if Knight doesn’t give them a script they want it would cause the movie to get canned. I assume they’d just go hire another writer to take a shot, and I’d rather they get the script right first.
What do you think then as the Star Wars Rey sequel is NOT cancelled despite recent rumors? Thoughts below as always.
