The Suicide Squad Is A REBOOT, Not A Sequel!

The first Suicide Squad was fairly well received by fans but hated by critics. Even though many fans enjoyed it, I have often heard as many say they didn’t like it, or that it’s okay but not great. The film currently sits at a 60% score from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. I know that RT has some controversy going on right now, but I think that number is probably accurate. It made sense that WB and DC would do a sequel and they tapped James Gunn to write and direct such a film… or so we thought.

In an interview with Peter Safran, producer for Aquamn and Shazam!JoBlo asked about Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie. They specifically asked how excited should people be for the sequel. Safran responded:

“First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”

So it is a reboot. This makes sense to me. WB told us that the DCEU as we know it is finished. That the focus would be on telling good stories for each character and not be concerned with connective tissue. Aquaman is a good example of this. Although there seems to be a lot of DCEU nods in the Shazam! trailers, they could easily cut those out to make it seem more stand alone.

WB jumped the gun when they did Batman V Superman and tried to catch Marvel without putting in the time and effort that the Marvel Cinematic Universe did. Who can blame WB though? Their sole purpose of existence is to make money, not worry about art or story. The filmmakers and actors should be concerned with the art and story of course, but they aren’t the execs in the boardroom. I always thought this stand-alone method was the way to go for WB. They can still do Justice League movies too. Even if they have to get different actors for some of the characters. If they still want to have a cinematic universe, they can use the multiverse idea.

In my opinion, Suicide Squad was a terrible movie. I saw the extended cut too and found it to be about as good as 1997’s Steel… okay maybe not that bad, but it is definitely not a good movie. Pacing, editing, story, actors, and visual effects all suffer in this poor attempt to copy the success of Guardains of the Galaxy. I know that many of you liked it, and that’s fine. One of my favorite movies ever is Little Monsters which is complete garbage objectively. This reboot could be a great thing for a good idea that was poorly executed. I know they have discussed recasting Deadshot, but I also think Margot Robbie shouldn’t play Harley Quinn unless they mention the multiverse. Honestly, why is she such a big deal to them? Everyone that fell in love with Joker and Harley as a couple needs to have their heads examined. He treats her like crap. She’s devoted, but he’d cut her loose in a heartbeat.

What do you think of this reboot news? Do you want them to use the multiverse or remain completely disconnected? Let us know in the comments below!
