The Wheel Of Time Season 2 Won’t Release Early 2023 Says Showrunner Rafe Judkins

The Wheel of Time Season 2 won't release early 2023 after all says showrunner Rafe Judkins.

The Wheel of Time Season 2 won’t release early 2023 after all says showrunner Rafe Judkins. In a recent interview with Dragonmount Judkins was asked about the reports that Season 2 would arrive in the early part of 2023. Whilst Judkins says it will be this year, he says early 2023 is a little too soon. There is still a lot of post production work to take care of.

I won’t cover everything Rafe spoke about in this interview as it was pretty extensive. However you can watch the whole thing if you want in the link above. One part I did find interesting was Judkins thoughts on how to manage the next two books of the series. We’ve known for some time that Season 2 will incorporate storylines from both Book 2 and Book 3 of the series. Judkins confirmed this is the case. The plan is to end Season 2 at a place where they can more accurately adapt Book 4 of the series. Which, as it happens, is also many fans favorite, and certainly a major turning point of the story. I myself didn’t really fall in love with the story until I got to the fourth book.

Judkins also says that he discussed this with author Brandon Sanderson. It was Sanderson who finished The Wheel of Time series after the death of creator Robert Jordan. Rafe says Sanderson agreed with him that the format of Book 2 and 3 are too similar. The books cover too much of the same ground to tell in a TV format across two seasons.

Ultimately we all know that we just cannot have 14 Seasons of this show for every book. I’d like to see it, but it would have to be cheap as chips to get made. Frankly that doesn’t sound great to me. I also agree that elements of Book 2 and Book 3 were slightly repetitive. As Rafe pointed out in the interview, Game of Thrones was adapting 50 pages or so per episode and they have the task of adapting about 200 pages per episode. It’s not the same, and as such cuts and changes have to be made.

Personally I thought Season 1 was pretty good, up until the finale, where I felt things fell off a cliff. Perhaps that’s partly because Season 1 was originally planned to be a longer 10 episode run. It was then reduced to 8 and they had to adapt quickly. There were other factors, like COVID and the fact they lost a lead actor before they finished the last portion of the shoot.

I must admit I’m more excited about Season 3 than I am Season 2, but if they can somehow pull it off, who knows?

As for when we might see Season 2, my guess is Spring/Summer of this year, but don’t quote me on that.
