Poor A Song of Ice and Fire. While the novels have managed to maintain a high bar of quality throughout, they have taken a good amount of time, and author George R.R. Martin has sadly delayed the release of The Winds of Winter more than once. As it stands, we really don’t know when that book is going to hit shelves, but that largely has to do with Martin’s method of writing.

Unlike someone like Brandon Sanderson, who tends to plot meticulously (hence his prolific output), Martin is very much a writer who discovers the world and story while in-process. It’s part of what’s delayed The Winds of Winter, and it’s part of the reason why he may have end up writing a lot more chapters than are required for the actual story.

According to Martin himself in an interview with WGN Radio, he reveals there is such a chapter that follows Tyrion that will likely be cut from The Winds of Winter, and that it could end up being released as a standalone story.

So, with that in mind, regardless of how things eventually end in A Song of Ice and Fire, it sounds like there may be content for companion books down the line full of shorter stories following some of the characters.
