Fans, including me, have had some serious concerns about The Witcher family show announced. Now Lauren Hissrich, The Witcher showrunner explains decision to fans online. For those unaware, along with several other details it was announced this weekend there would be a The Witcher family show. No details of this show had yet been given and you can find all the other Witcher announcements in the related section below.
In the article linked below I said I loved everything else announced for The Witcher universe, except this family show. I was not alone, and as you can see some fans were asking the questions I was on social media. Lauren Hissrich is showrunner on The Witcher and therefore probably the boss. Well, at least when it comes to Netflix’s Witcher shall we say? My issue was that the Witcher Universe is dark and very adult, I love that. To manufacture a family oriented story out of that Universe does not make much sense to me. Why would you want to attract kids in when they cannot watch any other Witcher content on the platform?
Check out Hissrich’s responses after the link below.

— can be extrapolated to stories that kids in this chaotic world desperately need, and could benefit from.
I say this as the mom of an 8 year old and a 10 year old. They've begged me to watch the show. They can't. It's not appropriate, too mature and dark, as you say. But.

And how we can fight back against those bleak black holes of humanity, so everyone knows there's a place for them? Then I'm in.
And yes, I hope this extends the brand viewership. I love The Witcher world. And I want more people to love it, too, no matter their age. Don't you?

So, this will be a separate story, set in the Witcher Universe, but aimed at a more universal audience. It can be done, but it’s not easy to pull off. I’d look at something as lauded as The Last Airbender, a show suitable for kids, but with layers only adults would understand. It’s extremely tricky to tread that line and takes clever writing. I’m not 100% convinced this Witcher team can pull that off. However, I hope I am wrong and will hold my hands up if they create a product that can also engage me as an adult.
I guess we will see? What do you think of The Witcher family show idea? What do you think of Hissrich’s comments as The Witcher showrunner explains decision to fans online? Thoughts below as always.
