As I reported yesterday, The Witcher has been doing damn well for Netflix. In fact, it has the highest ratings of any first season of a show. Granted, it’s also on the heels of a new viewer counting system Netflix is utilizing, but clearly it’s doing well enough that they haven’t canceled Season 2 plans and are now even moving forward with a previously-rumored animated project.
Netflix has announced The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, a spinoff anime film that will come from the live-action series showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich. Netflix states that “the world of ‘The Witcher’ expands in this anime film that explores a powerful new threat facing the Continent.”

There is no word on when this anime film will take place within the timeline, though this admittedly comes from someone who has yet to dive into the world of the novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. I’m sure there is a more well-versed expert out there who could give a better answer.
Regardless, this is one of Netflix’s first attempts to really hammer down on a franchise outside of Stranger Things. Despite how much content they have, they aren’t really great at branding specific content and capitalizing on people’s love of it. This could be a step in them actually doing this, and could help interest a different demographic of potential viewers.
