The Witcher Showrunner On How They Chose Directors Of Season 1

The Witcher is finally coming to Netflix on December 20th, and it feels like it has been a long time since we first wrote about this show being greenlit by Netflix, Lauren Hissrich becoming showrunner, and then updating fans with social media posts about location shooting and casting.

A big part of any successful show is finding the right directors to helm the actual episodes. The Witcher will feature the talents of directors such as Alik Sakharov (Game of Thrones), Alex Garcia Lopez (Daredevil), Charlotte Brandstrom (The Man in The High Castle), and Marc Jobst (Daredevil), all shows I have enjoyed immensely. When speaking with Variety recently Hissrich spoke about why these directors were chosen for The Witcher.

“What I was looking for was an understanding of fantasy and an understanding of horror. Those were the two big things. And horror kind of came in as an unexpected thing…I needed people who were in love with this genre and who weren’t afraid to press boundaries and to not rely on standard coverage…But really, for me, the biggest thing was their ability to work with the actors. Even if you take the bells and whistles away, if you take the magic and the violence and the sex and the blood [away], then you have three really broken people. And to me the directors had to be able to get in and work with Henry and to work with Anya and Freya and take all the fancy costumes, all that away, and just deal with them as humans who are scared and trying to find their way through the world.”

There are so many monsters in The Witcher universe that I cannot wait to see how they handle the horror elements Hissrich speaks of. However, as Hissrich says, and I think this is true of any story, the characters are of primary importance to the success of the show. Not just the three lead characters of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, but the secondary characters as well.

I have to say I can’t wait to start watching this on December 20th, a day after I watch Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, and right now I’d say the one that excites me most of these two is The Witcher.
