They’re Making A View-Master Movie And I Hate Life

You all know me. I’m pro-Hollywood to a fault. While most people hate the idea of most ideas being adapted for the big screen that aren’t original, I’m usually one to wait and see what the writers come up with before I poo-poo it. However, there are some ideas out there that really have no business being realized on the big screen…and a View-Master movie really is one of those things.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t care for Battleship at all, but there was at least SOMETHING to base a film on. There was a core premise of a board game there, and the same goes for the inevitable Monopoly movie (whenever the hell that gets around to happening). But every so often, you come across one that should never be. And again, that’s View-Master.

So it is with great displeasure that I must report that MGM and Mattel are developing a View-Master movie. In case the name doesn’t ring a bell, it was that one toy you may have had as a kid where you flip through different slides and…like, that’s it. You buy different discs with different themed images like from your favorite cartoon or character. And yeah, that’s f***ing it. That’s f***ing it. And now that’s being made into a movie.

“Since the 1940s, View-Master has inspired wonder and joy in children of all ages, creating huge opportunities for storytelling,” said Brenner in a statement. “MGM Pictures has tremendous expertise and a proven track record in capturing audiences’ imagination through film, and we’re proud to be partnering with them to bring another Mattel franchise to theaters. This marks another important milestone as we transform Mattel into an IP-driven, high-performing toy company.”

“View-Master was the first device that allowed families all over the world to escape their reality and take them places they never thought they could go,” Jonathan Glickman, MGM’s motion picture group, said. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Mattel to create a family adventure integrating the old school turn and click stereotypic device with the modern world of virtual reality.”

So that’s a thing that’s being made, and it marks the second collaboration between MGM and Mattel, the other being the American Girl movie, which was announced earlier this month.
