Thor Was Never In Guardians 3 And James Gunn Was Worried After Endgame

In a recent interview Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth admits the film 'became too silly' in the end.

According to director James Gunn, Thor was never in Guardians 3, so he was a bit worried after he saw Endgame. His fears were soon assuaged by Marvel boss Kevin Feige, However, as far as Gunn was concerned, there was never any chance of Thor showing up in the third movie. At least, not if he was directing it.

Gunn, promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the situation.

“They chose to have that ending in editing,” he says. “And I didn’t think it was gonna be in there. Endgame came out right after I decided to do Guardians again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in Endgame, and then it came out and then I was like, ‘What the fu** am I gonna do?’” He was saved by 2021’s Taika Waititi-directed Thor: Love and Thunder, which quickly concluded that plotline.

“That’s when [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] told me Taika’s gonna do Thor, and we’ll have the Guardians in it. I said, ‘Thank God!’… To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie. Taika took a bullet for me. Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor.”

I know we all did wonder at the time. Was Thor in the Guardians 3 script, or was this news to James Gunn? I guess we now know the answer is kinda the latter. Perhaps the delays for Guardians 3 were also partly to do with needing Thor: Love and Thunder to come first than just the James Gunn firing and rehiring?

I know Thor: Love and Thunder gets a bad rap. I for one enjoyed it, though I’m a bit of a Taika Waititi fan, so I can see why many didn’t. For me it was stylized as though the story was being told, unreliably by Korg. However, I’ve been told that’s me making excuses, and that it wasn’t really there? I kinda liked how Thor just attached himself to the Guardians and annoyed them so much, they were glad to get rid of him. However, at the same time, I’m also glad Guardians 3 will be as it was always intended to be.

What do you think? James Gunn says he was a bit worried after Endgame because Thor was never in Guardians 3. Do you think it all worked out for the best, or did Taika Waititi really ‘take a bullet’ for Gunn? Thoughts below as always.
