In a post SDCC interview, actor Tim Blake Nelson talks about his return as The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World. This in attendance in Hall H got to see a teaser trailer for Brave New World. Most of the talk was about Harrison Ford’s transformation into Red Hulk, go figure. Far as I know, Blake Nelson’s The Leader was not actually shown in the footage. Though, after the Hall H Panel Tim Blake Nelson spoke to Total Film/Games Radar.
“I had given up on getting to play this character again and had despaired on that,” Nelson details about coming back as Samuel Sterns. “I was astonished frankly when they said, ‘We’re bringing you back as The Leader, and it’s going to be in the Captain America franchise.’ I love Anthony Mackie, we’ve worked together before, we went to the same drama school, so I was all in.”
Of course the actor is referring to the fact his last appearance as Samuel Sterns. That was 16 years ago in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

However, The Leader is not what we saw in that movie, so what will be different?
‘During the panel, Nelson teased that his character has been brought back for a “great story”. He wouldn’t tell us much more other than, “I’ll just say that he hasn’t been sitting around.”‘
‘What we do know is that The Leader will also be getting a new look this time too, as Nelson alluded to a fresh design. “You can go and look in the comics for hints of what we’re up to,” he teases. “I think that the expansion of that into film language is going to astonish.”‘
I guess we will find out early 2025? The Leader was a villain i always enjoyed in the comics. So far we have never really had a live-action version to compare so I’ll just hope this character works.
What do you think of his comments at SDCC as Tim Blake Nelson talks about his return as The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World. Thoughts below as always.
