Titan Comics Announces At SDCC The Return of The Savage Sword Of Conan

Excitement filled the air as global publisher Titan Comics and entertainment studio Heroic Signatures made a long-awaited announcement today. The Savage Sword of Conan, the cult classic publication originally released in 1974, is set to make a triumphant return in 2024. Fans can look forward to all-new gritty and gruesome tales from the world of Conan the Barbarian, presented in the magazine’s original black-and-white format.

The Savage Sword of Conan broke new ground back in 1974 by featuring Robert E. Howard’s iconic character, Conan the Barbarian, in a darker and more mature manner than its flagship counterpart. Unrestrained by the Comics Code Authority, the series explored grittier and bloodier storylines and art, captivating readers and earning a devoted following. Legendary creators such as Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, and Walter Simonson contributed their exceptional talents to the publication.

As part of the 50-year anniversary celebration, the brand-new The Savage Sword of Conan magazine is set to hit comic shops in 2024. The team behind this revival is a “murderers’ row” of writers and artists, including John Arcudi, Frank Tieri, Patch Zircher, Howard Chaykin, Rafael Kayanan, Cary Nord, Rebeca Puebla, Dan Panosian, Richard Pace, Gerardo Zaffino, and more.

Editor Matt Murray expressed the overwhelming demand for the return of this iconic title in its original black-and-white anthology magazine format. He revealed that the plan to bring back The Savage Sword of Conan in this format has been kept under wraps, generating excitement among both fans and creators. Murray shared his confidence in living up to the high expectations and preserving the legacy of the classic book, promising that the new creative team will forge an exhilarating chapter in Conan’s savage story.

This news follows the successful launch of the new ongoing Conan the Barbarian comic series, written by Jim Zub and featuring art by Roberto De La Torre. In addition to the return of The Savage Sword of Conan, Titan Comics continues its archival publishing of Conan the Barbarian: The Original Comics Omnibus and Savage Sword of Conan: The Original Comics Omnibus. Fans can also anticipate the release of Volume 9 of the original Savage Sword of Conan series in November.

During the San Diego Comic-Con, another noteworthy announcement was made – the anticipated launch sales numbers for Conan the Barbarian Comic #1, slated for release on August 2. The initial print of the comic has already exceeded 80,000 confirmed sales, making it the largest selling issue in Titan Comics’ history. With second and third printings in the pipeline, final sales for the debut issue are projected to surpass 100,000 copies.

Ricky Claydon, Titan Publishing Director, expressed immense pride in the team’s achievements and the overwhelming support from distribution and retail partners. He praised the work of writer Jim Zub and artist Roberto De La Torre, labeling their creation as “barbarically perfect.”
