In a recent podcast appearance with friend and Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum, Tom Welling said he’s willing to play Superman again in a movie. Honestly there’s a time when I would have loved to see this, but that time has long since passed. Welling played Clark Kent/Kal-El in Smallville for many seasons (of varying quality) in the popular show. At the time Smallville was in its peak I doubt you’d have found many fans who wouldn’t want to see Welling taking that role into a movie.
At the time there was no Superman movie since Superman IV. However, whilst Smallville was still airing WB made Superman Returns. Therefore the idea of Welling making the jump to big screen was seemingly off the table. If only we could go back in time and stop Bryan Singer from making that piece of crap. Well, perhaps I’m a tad harsh, Singer did pull off one of my favourite ever Superman scenes on film, the plane rescue. However Spacey’s Luthor was awful, so was everyone else, and the son thing was stupid.
For this fan I’d rather have seen someone make a movie with Welling and Rosenbaum. Smallville lost the plot a bit for me in later seasons by rehashing all the same things again and again. And the blank refusal which must have been a mandate by WB that we never see Welling in the suit, even at the end. Oh well.

Welling was appearing on Rosenabaum’s Inside of You podcast and the host asked him if he’d play Clark again in a movie?
“I mean, I’d be, ‘Yes, let’s hear it.’ I don’t know how it would happen.
“I mean listen, I was thinking about this the other day right before we did our Talk Ville Podcast. We were on one of the most successful shows in the history of television, like Top 50. From that show, I’ve never gotten an incoming call from anyone involved in that show for further work.”
“I’m not saying, like, I don’t feel bad about that, I don’t harp on anybody about that,” he continued. “But you would think that when you’re successful, [you’d continue to be successful] with successful people. But I think the time has changed.”
The way Smallville kinda went off a cliff, I’m not sure I’d have chosen those creatives to make said Smallville movie anyway. However, as said above, the time has passed. Welling and Rosenbaum are my age or older now and the younger generation has likely never heard of them. Also, we have had a failed DCEU and now we are starting again with a young Clark in the DCU.
What they should have done is either made a Metropolis series post Smallville or a movie back then. Wasted potential, but outside of audio drama’s and animation, the time has passed.
So what do you think as Tom Welling said he’s willing to play Superman again in a movie? Thoughts below as always.
