Are there currently too many MCU projects? There’s an argument to be made and Damon Lindelof says less is more when it comes to the MCU. The Watchmen showrunner and director recently appeared recently on Vulture’s Into It podcast.
“It’s always going to be hard because once you’ve got someone’s attention, you want to keep it,” Lindelof said. “And so the idea of letting it go and not knowing if you’re ever going to get it back again is sort of like, it’s antithetical to the way that we’re wired.”
“From a slightly sort of more cynical standpoint, this is a business,” he continued. “It’s an industry. And if you make a couple of great Marvel movies, the instinct is, ‘We need to make more Marvel movies, and we need to expand this.’ And I have this sort of interior feeling of like, ‘Wow, I wish they made less because it would make each one that came out a little bit more special. But I watch all of them. … People don’t want things to end. I do.”

To be clear Lindelof isn’t doing a Scorsese here, he says he watches the MCU movies and shows. However I can certainly get Lindelof’s point here and it’s kinda tricky to argue against. In recent years we’ve gone from one Marvel movie a year, to four movies and four Disney+ series per year, or more. That has been a massive expansion and as such the ongoing stories being told are splitting off a little these days.
With so many threads it can be harder and harder for even big fans to keep track of everything going on in the MCU. Was the quality better in Phase 1? Not for me. However I may argue it was superior in Phase 3, so far anyway.
Is Damon Lindelof right that less is more in the MCU? Are there too many MCU projects on the go now? Have your say as always in the usual spot below.
