Top Gun 2 Begins Production, Tom Cruise Celebrates With Photo

There was talk of a Top Gun 2 for years without anything ever materializing, but now it’s official. Top Gun 2 has started production. Here is the tweet from Mr. Tom Cruise himself about starting day one of production on the sequel:

Top Gun was a seminal 80’s classic, and whilst a sequel fits right in with Hollywood’s obsession with reboots and sequels. I’m not completely sure where Top Gun fits in the modern era. The original film was loved by many, but it was also very much a product of its time. It was the Cold War, where Americans were the goodies and the USSR…ians were the baddies. Tom Cruise was a young, brash hotshot pilot that needed straightening out through the love of a good woman. And of course, they made sure to remind us that they were not flying these planes for fun, as Goose gets killed and it temporarily throws Tom Cruise’s “Maverick” off his game.

Many fans have a find place in their heart for Top Gun, but would it work in the 21st Century? One would presume Maverick will be an instructor for a new group of recruits, would this mean the focus would remain on Maverick, or would he be a secondary support character to new younger leads. Are you kidding? This is a Tom Cruise movie, of course, it will be all about Maverick. I wonder if it will be as homoerotic as the original?

Maybe they have a great script that has a real story to tell, but I do wonder if Top Gun 2 is about 20 years too late arriving? Either way, Top Gun 2 will be flying into theaters on July 12, 2019.
