Toy Story 4: Yes, The Late Don Rickles Is Still Mr. Potato Head

The Toy Story franchise has been around for over 20 years, and along the way, we’ve lost a couple of key actors. Prior to the recording of Toy Story 3, Jim Varney, who played Slinky Dog, passed away, forcing Pixar to hire Blake Clark in his place. However, more recently, the great Don Rickles also passed away, potentially leaving another vacant spot in the original toy crew, as he played the character Mr. Potato Head in all three movies.

With the recent release of the Toy Story 4 trailer, many fans couldn’t help but notice that Mr. Potato Head didn’t say anything in it. That’s not to say that Pixar was intentionally hiding his lines, but given that Rickles passed away back in 2017, it was hard not to question whether or not he was quietly replaced for this fourth outing. Luckily, it looks like that isn’t the case. Director of the film, Josh Cooley, took to Twitter to make the revelation to curious fans. Here’s how he made the reveal.

“‘Some people say funny things, I say things funny.’ -Don Rickles
All of his pieces may be replaceable, but his voice is not. Honored he signed on for TS4, honored he’s in TS4.”

Of course, it was never an assumed thing that Rickles didn’t voice the character. As many animation fans know, making these movies takes a hell of a lot of time and effort, and requires actors come in years in advance to record their lines. Sure, they may have to come in to do finalized lines as they start to tighten things, but on the whole, actors’ jobs are usually done long before the finished product is out.

Such appears to be the case with Rickles, which is great! We have no idea if Toy Story 4 will be the final outing for all these characters, but at least for now, we know most of the core cast remains intact.
