Transformers Film Franchise Officially Rebooted

The Transformers film franchise is an interesting study in what will make money. The first film was fine and played off of nostalgia despite the fact Megatron looked like a Predator had a baby with a cellphone. The sequels were a mess though. Sure, there were some good parts in Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction but overall they sucked. Then Bumblebee came along last year and the franchise got a breath of fresh, yet confusing, air.

The movie seemed to retcon a lot of what had happened in the other films but also set up some of what would happen in the same. Such as Bee losing his voice. This, combined with rumors about a reboot over the last two years, left many wondering about the future of the franchise. Well, thanks to a panel at Toy Fair 2019 in NYC we have our answer… Bumblebee is the start of “a new storytelling universe.”

I think this is a smart business move. They can appeal to those of us that loved the original cartoons and toys and bring a new story for new audiences and kids. Not only did the Transformers aesthetics look much better, although they should have looked at the G1 cartoon for the Cybertron vehicle forms, the actual story was fun. I’m not sure If I will be in the theater opening weekend for the next one, but I am interested to see where we’ll be going next.
