TV: Gotham “Mad City: Red Queen” Takeaways and Predictions

After last week’s thrilling episode, what type of outcome will there be for Gordon, Mario, Lee, and Vale?  Will Gordon be able to explain his choice?  Will Vale live?  Also, what with Cobblepot think of Nygma’s new relationship?  Read on to find out!

Jervis Tetch – Tetch comes into contact with a psychotropic drug labeled “Red Queen” that turns people insane.  Tetch then continues his creepiness as he goes to get some of his dead sister’s blood and kisses her corpse.  I have enjoyed how each episode Benedict Samuel’s interpretation of Mad Hatter becomes more demented.  Tetch drains Alice of her blood and adds an accelerant to it before tracking Gordon to the hospital and making him inhale the “Red Queen” drug.  He then is seen at The Founder’s Dinner with the leading members of Gotham, including Cobblepot!  Tetch crashes The Founder’s Dinner telling the leaders of Gotham to drink the wine he put Alice’s blood in.  He feels that all of Gotham is the reason his sister is dead, and he wants the leader of Gotham’s to pay.  Bullock and Captain Barnes come in to stop him.  He recognizes his sister’s blood in the captain due to his aggressive nature and he releases a chilling laugh at the realization.  This leads to the apprehension of Tetch, TweedleDee and TweedleDum as they are put into Arkham.

Prediction – This isn’t the last we have seen of Tetch.  At first I thought he may get the Mr. Freeze treatment where he is only a focus for a handful of episodes.  Tetch’s character has been a highlight of Season 3.  Alice’s blood is a part of Captain Barnes and as long as he is alive, Tetch will be connected.  Also, look for him to find a way to go back after Gordon, even if he devises a plan from behind bars.

Gordon – Vale is alive!  She knows Gordon chose Lee because Tetch would shoot her instead.  When realizing this, she tells Gordon that they are done and that he is nothing but trouble.  Gordon seems to be losing all lines of support in this episode.  He wanted to help the GCPD find Tetch, but Captain Barnes tells him to leave, or he will have him arrested.  Harvey tells Gordon that he is afraid, so either come back to the force or stop getting in the way with his rogue missions. Continuing his trend of burning bridges, Lee tries to tell Mario Gordon’s reasoning behind choosing her.  Mario is mad that he put Lee in trouble in the first place, and even if he did want to saveLee, what was the reason?  Either way, he doesn’t want Gordon in the picture.  Gordon tells Lee that he didn’t choose her in order to save her and that he wanted to save Vale.  She tells him that Bullock was right and that he is afraid.  In Gordon’s hallucination due to the “Red Queen” drug, Barbara is his guide.  In his hallucination he sees Bruce, Cobblepot, Lee, and more of his inner demons.  Each of the “floors” Barbara takes him to deals with a different part of his inner thoughts, desires, dreams, and fears.  Through all the hallucinations, he sees his dad, which seems to be the root of his issues.  He gets to speak to his dad which helps clear his mind from what has been holding him back from returning to GCPD.  His dad tells him to find his ring, which had the family motto on it.  After Mario saves Gordon from his hallucinations, Gordon returns to his apartment and finds his father’s ring with the translated inscription reading, “While we breathe, we shall defend.”  Finding this ring leads him back to joining the force.  The final twist comes at the end of the episode when two members of The Court of Owls are meeting.  One member, who is in the shadows, is wearing the Gordon family ring!!

Prediction – Gordon burned some bridges this episode.  Even though he came to a place of peace with his father, which led to him rejoining the force, he still has a handful of people upset with him;  Lee, Mario, Vale, not to mention other past strained relationships with Falcone, Barbara, Cobblepot, Tetch, and Nygma.  Look for the focus over the next couple episodes to surround the dynamics of Gordon, Mario, Lee, Vale, and this new figure in the shadows.  I think the person in The Court of Owls is either his father, or another close family member.  The Court is filled with prestigious families of Gotham.  Could they have recruited the former District Attorney at one time?  This would completely change the way Gordon views his father and his life.

Cobblepot and Nygma – Nygma invites Isabella to Cobblepot’s mansion for dinner.  Cobblepot is clearly mad that he not only did not return home the night before, but that he is apparently “in love”.  Cobblepot goes to visit Isabella, and lets it “slip” that Nygma was in Arkham, and also insinuating that she looks like someone from Nygma’s past.  At The Founder’s Dinner, Cobblepot is speaking to a woman who turns out to be one of the leaders of The Court of Owls!  She says that they have had their eyes on him for a while and they will be in contact. Nygma explains himself to Isabella, and to his surprise, she says she has read about it and that his past does not matter.  Cobblepot accidentally interrupts Nygma and Isabella kissing, much to his dismay.

Prediction – Penguin is going to kill Isabella.  If he doesn’t kill her, she will be someone more important than she seems.  I think he will kill her out of his jealousy which will actually drive Nygma and Penguin apart leading to their own individual push for power over Gotham.  This could also lead to Nygma sabotaging Cobblepot’s role as mayor.  I would love to see a battle of wits between the two.

Bruce – Bruce is seen prepping for dinner with Selina.  He thinks he is stood up, but Selina ends up coming.  Bruce is mad that Selina isn’t honest with him.  She feels the “relationship” is weird.

Prediction – This wasn’t necessary for the episode.  I understand they are paying homage to the eventual relationship between Bruce / Selina and Batman / Catwoman, but this has been the most uninteresting part of the show.  It seems forced.

Captain Barnes – We learn that even though Alice Tetch’s blood gives limited strength and agility, it eventually creates pure rage in its subjects.  This is seen when he later interrogates a prisoner with excessive force, and the way he beats Tetch during his apprehension.  He is seen near the end of the episode reading over his Will and Testament.

Prediction – Look for Captain Barnes to turn into the type of cop he has always hated.  He disagreed with Gordon’s overly physical tactics when he was in the GCPD (a la Theo Galavan), yet Alice’s blood looks to be making him worse.  Look for him to possibly kill someone in his rage.

What’d you think of this week’s episode of Gotham?  Do you agree with my predictions?  What do you predict will happen?  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks again for reading!
