I’m not gonna lie. I completely forgot Animorphs was a thing. Growing up, it was one of those series I dabbled in temporarily. But never really took to the series like some of my friends. Nonetheless, it was undoubtedly popular in the ‘90s. While it had a Canadian TV series back in the day, it has yet to get the big-screen treatment. Well, it looks like that’ll be changing very soon.
According to THR, there is an Animorphs movie in the works from Scholastic and Picturestart. This project is being produced under a 2019 deal between the two companies. This deal has them developing live-action projects from the publisher’s Y.A. line. So, expect this to be the first of many projects down the line.
Personally, I’m interested to see where this one will land, studio-wise. Sure, it’s supposedly going to get a big-screen treatment, but I don’t think it’ll end up that way. Given the history of the franchise, this would be a great project for a streaming service like Disney+, Apple TV+, or even HBO Max. I guess it’s possible they can line up with a studio for a theatrical release, but it really doesn’t seem like the kind of project that would warrant that these days.

For those unfamiliar, Animorphs follows five teens who use their abilities to morph into animals they touch to fight an alien invasion. Given the premise and the five kids, it feels right at home alongside a property like Power Rangers.
“The central themes of Animorphs have resonated strongly with kids for more than two decades, and the time is right for a feature film that takes this captivating sci-fi adventure to another level for audiences today,” said Scholastic Entertainment’s Iole Lucchese. “Picturestart has an incredible track record of success, and Erik and his team are the perfect partners to help bring this exciting new series based on the adventure-packed books to movie screens.”
“We couldn’t be more excited to work with Scholastic to adapt Animorphs, an iconic book series with a wildly unique combination of exciting, witty, outlandish and grounded elements that feel all too relevant for our times,” said Erik Feig of Picturestart. “We know these books have a deservedly deep bench of passionate fans — ourselves included— and we hope to make Katherine Applegate and her co-author, Michael Grant, proud as we bring Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias to life for a new generation.”
