Universal needs some franchises. In a world where franchises are the main driving force in the film industry, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get by without them. And not just any franchise, but billion-dollar franchises. Of course, Universal has Jurassic Park, but that thing seems to be coming to an end. The other big one is Fast & Furious, which is releasing its first spin-off movie, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, later this year. But given how much the series has grown, it’s clear there’s room for even more growth.

In an extensive piece from THR chronicling the drama surrounding the now-former-producer of the franchise Neal Moritz, the piece states that the studio, which is “hard up for franchises” is exploring other ideas for the series. This includes another Fast & Furious spin-off that would follow Cipher, Charlize Theron’s character from The Fate of the Furious. This would reportedly be a female-fronted take on the series, with one talent rep on the movie asking, “How do you broaden the franchise? How do you Avengers-ize it?”

Interestingly enough, there was no mention of Michelle Rodriguez perhaps being involved on some level. Of course, that’s not to say she won’t, but the actress criticized the series pretty publicly recently, and even stated earlier this year that she wasn’t sure if she’d be coming back. Given that she’s the longstanding female character throughout the series, though, she’d be the natural one to return in a female-driven spin-off.
