‘Unreleasable’ Chaos Walking FINALLY Gets A Release Date — What Happened?

Hollywood is full of plenty of problematic productions. You get those movies with lots of negative buzz, questionable scripts, or incredibly-long delays. One such film is Chaos Walking. This was a film that seems to have all the right elements to succeed. It’s based on a best-selling young adult novel, it has a great director in Doug Liman, and of course, two big leads in Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland.

And yet, Chaos Walking seemed to have hit quite the substantial roadblock in April of 2018. That’s right. 2018. That’s nearly two years ago at this point that THR first pointed out that this movie had some BIG problems going on. In addition to the reportedly-significant reshoots (the film was pegged as “unreleasable”), there was the problem of fitting them into Holland and Ridley’s busy schedule. Of course, the movie didn’t make its March 1, 2019 release date.

Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that the reshoots (which added $15 million to the $100 million-ish budget) were reportedly assisted by Don’t Breathe’s Fede Álvarez and were supposedly done this past May — though Liman was still on board as director. And yet…there was still no release date for this thing. Until now.

Deadline is now reporting that on a recent Lionsgate earnings call, it was stated that the film will hit around January 22, 2021. That’s nearly two years after it was originally supposed to hit theaters.

Sadly, there is still no word on what the whole issue was. No word on why, even after the shoot last May, it would require an extra 20 months to get it in theaters. All we’ve been left with after all this time is the same single image we’ve been using for the past couple of years. I know I’m not alone in wondering just what in the heck happened with this thing and can’t wait to eventually get an answer.

Hopefully, when the movie finally hits, it’ll be worth it. What do you think of this whole Chaos Walking fiasco? Are you at all intrigued to see how it turns out? Let us know your thoughts down below!
