Valiant Entertainment Announces Their ‘Breakthrough’ Lineup

It’s a fact that Valiant Entertainment has the third largest superhero shared universe behind DC Comics and Marvel Entertainment. It’s been an up and down year for the publisher as their acquisition by DMG Entertainment did not sit well with many loyal readers. Their 2018 event Harbinger Wars II was not as well received as they would have hoped. But they did have some great titles like Ninja-K, Bloodshot: Salvation, Shadowman and X-O Manowar. So what’s next for them in 2019?

Yesterday, Valiant Entertainment announced their Breakthrough lineup for spring and summer of 2019, which will launch four limited series. Valiant senior editorial director Robert Meyers talked to SYFY WIRE about the the Breakthrough line up.

“I’m incredibly excited to reveal Breakthrough, the next step in the continued success of the Valiant Universe that builds toward a full year of exciting announcements,” Meyers said. “These are extraordinary stories told by master storytellers, featuring comics’ most compelling villain, Toyo Harada; the main stage debut of Punk Mambo; the evolution of the future; and perhaps the scariest assembly of superspies the Valiant Universe has ever seen. I can’t wait to reveal what else is in store for 2019!”

The first title that we will see from Breakthrough will be The Life and Death of Toyo Harada launching in March 2019. A six part limited series written by Eisner winner Joshua Dysart, who also wrote Harbinger and Imperium. The series features my favorite character in the Valiant Universe, Toyo Harada, who in that universe is the most powerful superhuman and CEO of Harada Global Conglomerates, not to mention secretly the head of the Harbinger Foundation. He has been known for recruiting and developing young telekinetics known as “psiots”. Not long ago, his foundation was destroyed by a massive psychic episode. Now he faces his final battle, but he will not go down without a fight.

The second title is Punk Mambo, launching in April of 2019. This five part limited series will be written by the twisted mind of Cullen Bunn who earlier this year finished his run on his amazing Dark Horse horror comic book Harrow County, with artwork by Adam Gorham. The series follows a British voodoo priestess lurking on the outskirts of New Orleans, who kicks off a supernatural adventure with both terror and humor.

The third title Fallen World, launching in May of 2019. This will be a five part limited series written by Dan Abnett, who has written titles for DC Comics like Titans, Aquaman and Guardians of the Galaxy over at Marvel Comics. Also on the creative team for the book will be artist Adam Pollina. This book takes place in a cyberpunk future where the fate of humanity is in danger. Travel to the year 4002 where the cyborg samurai Rai attempts to stand in the way of a ominous threat.

The fourth and final title that is part of Breakthrough is Killers, scheduled to launch in July of 2019. This title will also be a five part limited series written by B. Clay Moore with artwork by Fernando Dagnino. This title will feature the world deadliest superspies on Earth competing to claim the ultimate prize. What that prize is we’ll just have to wait and see. This series is no doubt set up by the amazing series that just finished Ninja-K written by Christos Gage.

According to Valiant Entertainment, these four series will be offering new readers a wide variety of stories and genres, while long time Valiant readers will have the opportunity to discover more about their favorite characters. Personally the title that I am very excited about are The Life and Death of Toyo Harada as I look forward to seeing how Dystart wraps up his story.
