Venom Clip: To Protect And Serve

Every couple days I am reminded of one irrefutable fact: that we will be getting a Venom movie. It’s not something we asked for. It’s not something we particularly want, but it’s something that’s happening nonetheless. We’ve seen glimpses of the film in trailers and have seen all sorts of other marketing for it, but have yet to see a complete scene.

Sony has fixed that problem for us by releasing a 30-second clip. In it, we get to see Eddie Brock facing off against a SWAT team. He starts out in the clip telling them they don’t want to try and attack him. Obviously, that does nothing, and we’re then given a fight scene that’s pulled almost directly out of a Hulk film from the early-2000s.

Yeah, I’m not a fan. Sure, we don’t really have much context for the scene (though I can piece together the basics), but nothing about it feels fresh. It feels more like a tired premise with an action scene that’s been executed dozens of times before. I wouldn’t say it feels incompetent, by any means, but it continues to make the film look dated.

But what do you think? Are you as rough on this as I am? Based on the 13,000 or so “likes” the video has received on YouTube, it seems clear I may be in the minority here. Let me know where you fall down below!
