Oh, boy. Here we are, folks. This is the world we’ve come to. A world where a sub-standard Venom movie is justifying itself financially at the box office, potentially emboldening Sony to continue on this dangerous road of D-list characters and mediocre scripts. But, okay, we may as well trudge down it together.
As of this writing, Venom has taken in $477.8 million at the box office globally and is likely to easily break $500 million this coming weekend, which is no surprise. However, what is a bit of a surprise is that the film still has yet to open in Japan and China, and if this film trajectory holds, it looks like it could easily break $600 million at the box office.

Whether or not some of us hate it, there does seem to be some love for the thick-tongued black beauty. According to Deadline, Sony’s president of International Distribution stated that the film was getting a lot of love overseas. Specifically, he shared stories about kids going to school in Venom costumes and that a lot of people were aware of the film outside of the core fans, which isn’t something I would have thought, at least in the States.
So what does this mean for Sony going forward? For sure they’ll be moving ahead with a sequel and other VenomVerse spin-offs, for starters. If by the time Spider-Man: Far From Home hits and they think they can function outside of the MCU, we may very well see Tom Holland’s character cross over, away from the world of the Avengers. Common sense dictates that there’s no way this would happen, but then again, I think we may have just crossed over into…the Twilight Zone (dun-dun-dun…dun-dun-dun).
