Veronica Mars Star Jason Dohring On His Internal Aversion To Veronica And Logan First Getting Together

Veronica Mars was always an odd show, especially for the time. Usually, in a lot of TV shows, you have the main cast working together toward some common goal — especially in a mystery-centric series. Veronica Mars was NOT like that in the slightest. Instead, you had virtually every single character in the main cast off on their own subplot, dealing with their own issues that often put them up against Veronica herself.

One such character was Logan, whose broken family led him to be quite the constant thorn in Veronica’s side. The aversion between the two was so strong, at the time, I didn’t think it possible that the two characters could ever be involved romantically. In fact, I was actually surprised when his character (who was credited further down the line than Veronica’s then-boyfriend, Duncan — who ended up being such a non-character, it’s ridiculous) quickly become one of the most important secondary characters in the whole show.

When asked by Collider whether or not he expected his character to ever become as important as he did, actor Jason Dohring responded:

“No. It was episode by episode for me. I was like, ‘Wow, cool! Here’s his dad. This is so fun.’ Probably the biggest shock was that the Veronica and Logan characters were just enemies, to start. When they first told us, ‘You guys are gonna be together,’ we both said, ‘WTF, man!’ They said, ‘You have to warm up to her, so we’re not just gonna do it overnight.’ There was a scene where I had to put my hand on her shoulder, and I did the first two rehearsals and it was hard to touch her because I built it so strong against that. So, after my failed rehearsals, touching her shoulder, the producer came up and prompted me further, and was like, ‘You’re gonna have to do this.’ I was able to manage that, and then move it into this whole other cool avenue for this romance.”

I have to say, this is pretty funny. Early on in that first season, it’s clear to see just how annoying Logan thinks Veronica is, and to know that such an aversion was really hard for Dohring to shake is pretty funny to hear. It isn’t uncommon for butting heads to ultimately fall for one another, but what really worked with these two is that I was convinced they completely loathed each other, and when they actually got together, it made sense given the circumstances.
